The cyanotype images begin as wash paintings. The water in each individual wash painting evaporates, leaving behind a reticulate texture and pattern– the result of the intermingling between oil, water, air, the artist’s brush, and the substrate the medium is painted on. Each wash painting is then transformed into a negative. The negative is placed over paper that is coated with a light-sensitive emulsion. After exposure to light the paper is hand washed in water which develops the image into a cyanotype print. The presence of light creates another element of transformation, an alchemy of materials. This medium merges both the handmade and the technological, and combines design, drawing, painting, and photography to create these luscious blue works of art. The art and artist also engage in a reciprocal dance and movement between one another and with the medium they are creating with, yielding these earthly and mystical prints.
